Project Pioneer represents a major step toward advancing the capture of greenhouse gas emissions. The project entails the construction of a large-scale carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage (CCS) facility at one of TransAlta’s coal-fired generating stations west of Edmonton, Alberta.

Project Pioneer brings together public and private partners who have been leaders on environmental issues for years. Current partners include:
  • Alstom, a global leader in energy technology, will bring their expertise in the Chilled Ammonia carbon capture process; and

  • Capital Power, which shares a long history working with TransAlta to bring best-in-class power technology to Albertans and is our joint venture partner for Keephills 3.
Further partnerships with the oil, natural gas and power sectors will provide expertise and knowledge into the full potential of CO2 storage for enhanced oil recovery.

Once complete, Project Pioneer will be one of the largest CCS facilities in the world and the first to have an integrated underground storage system.

Overview

Through Project Pioneer, TransAlta expects to reduce current CO2 emissions by one megatonne (Mt) per year.
Viewed as the most promising and
lowest cost approach to CCS, the
chilled ammonia process uses:
